The general purpose of applying vitreous China enamel to a ceramic item like a sink is to provide protection. It may also be used secondarily for aesthetic purposes. In covering the porcelain substrate, vitreous China gives anti-corrosive properties and helps against weathering and heat. Being non-porous also prevents bacteria from entering the surface, so it keeps from building up. It also absorbs less than 0.5% of water. The porosity of vitreous China can be further reduced by increasing its feldspar content.
